Nathan Platte is an associate professor of musicology at the University of Iowa, where he also holds an affiliated appointment in Cinematic Arts. He teaches a variety of classes that explore musical experiences across the 20th and 21st centuries. The author of Making Music in Selznick’s Hollywood (Oxford University Press, 2018), Nathan also cohosts and produces FilmCastPodScene, a podcast featuring commentary on films featured at Iowa City’s independent theater, FilmScene. He enjoys walking or running or playing bass trombone.
Anastasia Scholze is a fourth-year undergraduate at the University of Iowa, working towards a BA in Voice Performance. She is an Iowa Undergraduate Research Fellow interested in topics from film music to the Baroque, with special interests in women composers and more inclusive concert programming. This is her first experience creating a podcast. Besides music and podcasting, she enjoys reading, holding other people’s cats, and spending too much time on TikTok (regrettably).
In this podcast we'll look at film sound across time and around the globe. We start with the films of Robert Wise, who directed some of the most beloved 20th-century films, from musicals (West Side Story, The Sound of Music) to science fiction (The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Andromeda Strain, Star Trek: The Motion Picture) to biopics (I Want to Live!, Star!).
This podcast is made possible through generous support from the University of Iowa School of Music and the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates.
